Rick Rubin’s Latest Discovery: Paul Potts

This is not a joke.  This unassuming guy who was discovered on a UK TV show grabs you the second he opens his mouth. Rick Rubin says it makes him cry every time he watches the video which has 10 million hits on YouTube.

Has Rubin finally gone mad or is Paul Potts the next big thing? Will he simply drown in too much hype? Watch it and tell us your prediction.

  1. The article does not say that “[the video] makes [Rubin] cry every time he watches it.” The article clearly implies that he cried the first time he watched it and says nothing about subsequent viewings:
“‘Where does that come from?’ Rubin said as he watched. Tears were rolling down his cheeks. ‘I can’t look at this without crying,’ he said. ‘His voice is so beautiful.’ When Potts finished his song…”
I know y’all are trying to start controversy and increase page hits but you can do it without misquoting or misleading.

  2. I really was not trying to start controversy, but rather to gather opinions in if they thought the act really has a chance.
A does not you’re own quote from the article “Tears were rolling down his cheeks. ‘I can’t look at this without crying,'” verify my statement about Rubin’s reaction?

  3. Bruce, the specific part in your original statement to which I object is the assertion that Rubin cries “every time he watches it.” Although it appears that you present the line as a compliment of sorts (“legendary producer is so touched by singer that he cries!”), some could view your mischaracterization as an attempt to emasculate Rubin.
It’s a small, unfortunate error but it was completely unnecessary; your point (“unassuming man has awesome voice; will he continue to make it big or is it all hype?”) stands on its own merits. That’s all. No ill-will or hostility on my end; it’s just a bit of annoyance that you allowed a careless error that detracts from your legitimate questions.

  4. ANYWAYS [bruce’s quote doesn’t matter]…
that is an amazing, emotional piece of video, no doubt.
but it’s all about the expectation you have going into it…
americans are charitable, emotional folk, so i honestly wouldn’t be surprised if people came out in droves to patronize him with a form of “musical charity”…
not sure if rubin is mad on this one, but as lefsetz pointed out, the whole “i’m not coming to the office but why don’t we spend $$$ on the old CAA building” truly IS mad.

  5. I don’t think of singing as an either or thing. I sing because I love to sing and because I feel led to sing. I bet Paul Potts will
enjoy his voice just as much either way. I love Rick Rubin as a producer. Kathena Bryant singer (www.thehippynuts.com)
