R.I.P. Dave Clark Five Lead Singer Mike Smith

Dave Clark Five lead singer Mike Smith died of pneumonia in London Thursday just two weeks before the band was to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was 64.

Smith had been admitted to the intensive care unit Wednesday with a chest infection, a complication from a 2003 spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed below the ribcage with limited use of his upper body. (band bio)

  1. Dave Clark 5 were a highly underrated group here in the US. Part of that I believe is because after years of bad dealings Dave Clark resisted giving the rights to his music up to conglomerates that would only rip him off. He owned the masters, and the band’s track’s rarely circulated. Only 1 Dave Clark 5 CD was ever officially released here, and it was an expensive 2 disc compendium. Sort of the catch 22 music artists face with DRM/web wars these days, do you let more people access it for less than it’s value, or do you devalue it by letting it extinguish in obscurity.
