Mufin: Audio Based Music Discovery On Steroids

Mufin.com, a flexible and portable music discovery engine has launched in public beta. The company has 4 million songs in its database and its fingerprinting technology offers recommendations based on a song’s unique musical characteristics. Updates since the private beta release in September:

  • Mufin for Facebook: Access through Facebook via a widget and a Discovery Wall that lets fans share discoveries
  • Mufin for iTunes: Users can use mufin’s discovery to generate playlists based on any track in their library
  • Mufin doesn’t rely on metadata or an artist’s popularity
  • Share recommendations through email
  • Save playlists and notepads
  • Editorial recommendations
  • More

  1. My experience with Mufin has been horrible, as has the majority of everyone I’ve talked with. How this is getting continued press, I’m not sure. Just read some of these unhappy comments on:

    I hate to be a downer because I’d like a service that does this sort of thing well, but Mufin is just absurdly bad. Any readers here have a better experience?

  2. there’s definitely room for improvement but its far from horrible, for me at least. with the website i also got some really odd recommendations, but also some really nice ones..check out life in technicolor by coldplay for example.
    the new itunes plugin has been working really great for me and is a huge step forward from apple’s genius.
