Daily D.Y.I. – Music Blog Directories

DailyDIY
Yesterday, I shared the importance of reaching out to music blogs and suggested some search engine tricks to find them.  But there is another way to find just the right music bloggers – free music blog directories.  Most are self created or curated by volunteers which means that they are less then complete. Thus you may also want to do your own research.

Yesterday Hypebot reader Hit Singularity also smartly suggested: "A great tool for finding blogs to write

about your band is Hype Machine. They have a list of almost 1500 blogs, ranked by influence. The full list is here: http://hypem.com/list You can also use the main search engine on Hype Machine to find blogs that have reviewed similar artists to you and then reach out to those blogs.

I suggest developing lists of bloggers by region and your genre and reaching out to them regularly. Whatever method you use to find the right blogs, there is no question that they are the great equlaizer, providing important exposure to artists and labels with limited budgets.

Tomorrow: How to approach bloggers.

  1. As a representative for a hard rock/metal band from New Jersey I found that, for me, Blog Catalog was the most effective of these search options. I will admit I haven’t tried them all but of the three or four I did try it worked the best. The most effective thing for me was to search by the tag on the blog, so that any blog tagged “Hard Rock” or “Heavy Metal” would show up and I could then filter the list down to the ones most appropriate myself.

  2. I’ve been noticing that local blogs, for example, about a certain city or region, often are very into supporting and posting about local bands, even though they’re not music blogs.
It’s also smart to reach out to smaller blogs that haven’t started being totally bombarded with publicity outreach and become jaded at contact from anybody they don’t know.

  3. I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
