N.I.N. Released Free In New PlayApp Format

NIN
Nine Inch Nails' album "The Slip" has been released as a free Creative Commons licensed  single file, custom multimedia PlayApp download that can contain music, pictures, lyrics, and video. The songs in the NIN PlayApp are extractable as 192 kbps MP3 files and the pictures as high resolution .JPGs. Initially the format has been developed for Windows XP and Vista.

PlayApp is being designed as a new music sales format that offers more than just songs as a downloadable multiimedia collectible with DRM optional. There is no adware or spyware and all are digitally signed by the publisher. Custom PlayApps ready for sale can be setup for as little as $19.

  1. Sounds cool – what does it offer over a zip file?
Also, is *anyone* able to get their site to work? Apparently you have to “hover” over certain text to bring up toolbars, etc – none of that worked for me.

  2. The all-media-included approach is a good idea and much promising. On the other hand, 192 kbps is quite outdated. I didn’t expect Trent Reznor to come up with anything like that. Even itunes goes 256 kbps now… To be honest, up-to-date content providers should offer at least 320 kbps. Also, Reznor distributed it in mp3 and FLAC (!) first… Ok, most of current players don’t support FLAC. But mp3 is definitely a downgrade.

  3. Yes, after Reznor’s great work with the album I’m surprised to hear the album only available at 192kbps here. Maybe he’s testing the water or looking to drive more serious audio people back to his website for the full download options?
A package such as this is something that i see as having a lot of value or music buyers, and something that i hope grows in the near future. I am also unsure what this app would offer over a zip file though?
