Are You Talking To Your Fans Or With Them?

DailyDIY

"The relationship between fans and artists is less and less
like a business relationship in which artists and industry set the terms
and audiences either buy or don’t,
and more and more like a social relationship
in which bands and fans
have to negotiate terms together."

– Nancy Baym, Online Fandom

Are you talking to your fans or having a conversation with them? How can you change the way you communicate with fans to build a relationship that is mutually beneficial?

  1. Great common-sense point. Online relationships should be treated like actual face-to-face relationships where people listen, talk and respond appropriately to each other.
Success in social media is no different than any relationship success:
    More listening than talking.
    Ask permission.
    Give unexpected gifts.
Place value in others and treat them accordingly because the Golden Rule works virtually too. A social media strategy that treats this channel primarily as a PR vehicle is doomed to fail.
