Trent Reznor Says No More Social Networking

NIN "It's been an interesting experiment over the last couple of years or so. Faced with leaving the infrastructure of traditional record labels and figuring out what the right thing to do is in this new world – I found myself realizing that for me to have any concept of how to interact with the community and know what they might want / what they find appropriate, I need to immerse myself in that world and live it for a while.

The reason no record label knows how to market anything to new media is they don't live there…

They don't get it because they don't use it. What you've seen happen with the marketing and presentation of NIN over the last years is a direct result of living next to you, listening to you, consuming with you and interacting with you. Directly. There's no handlers or PR people here, it's me and my guys – that's it.

I will be tuning out of the social networking sites because at the end
of the day it's now doing more harm than good in the bigger picture and
the experiment seems to have yielded a result. Idiots rule…" – Trent Reznor

  1. calling losers that ‘friend you’ on myspace ‘friends’ …come on!!!!!! some loser who spends all hours on social networks communicating with their new ‘friends’ (weirdos, probable pedos, idiots..)
Thats my tale man. Everything in moderation. People who poke you or friend you on networks ARE NOT real friends but there are an awful lot of losers out there who think they are….get out and make real friends!!!
    That’s causing harm!!

  2. He raises a good point. I tend to follow Trent because I like the Independent mindset and the way he’s built an internet presence.

  3. The sense I get from his post is that he’s mainly talking about his personal enjoyment of the social networking aspect. For him, the benefits to NIN by immersing himself with the fans online is being outweighed by the toll negativity is taking on his psyche. I don’t think he’s tossing the concept of social networking out the window; just saying that within the context of NIN and the huge fanbase that comes with it more filtering, control and accountability needs to be put in place for social networking to be really worthwhile to him.

  4. I am Dan Krzykwa (singer/programmer/producer/remixer)from the Dance/Techno/Trance band”Madcap Syndrome”
www/madcapsyndrome.com and believe he is overhelmed by the personal time needed to do such a direct public relations connection within a social network and achieved the successful formula and called it good very commendable for his approach I still do direct connection and answer to all my fans in the social websites around the world and believe that your never to famous to reach out to the peaple that pay for you to perform and buy your music…By the way I Always catch the N.I.N. show when it comes tomy town Grand Rapids, Michigan I am never disapointed Trent Reznors
    A Genious….

  5. Social networks only work for someone who’s trying to sell something. If you’ve got a new cd,or a new movie,or a new comedy tour, social networks are the ONLY way to spread the word unless you’ve got millions of dollars in your marketing budget. If you’re on Myspace or Facebook to get laid, you’ve got a problem. There’s no other way to interact with MILLIONS of potential buyers in an efficient, less time consuming manner. When you’ve already built your band and people are coming to you for more,it’s easier to walk away. But if you’re trying to build your band, your fan base, and your worldwide reputation, you have no choice. He wouldn’t be walking away if his band weren’t already successful.

  6. There is a lot of truth in what he says & people are right….NIN has a following that will support them where ever they perform….Social networking is time consuming, but, for new artist, it’s important to continue adding fans.
And, then again, how do we know this is yet another genius marketing plan by Trent Reznor?
