Facebook Hits 250 Million Users

Facebook"As of today, 250 million people are using Facebook to stay updated on what's happening around them and share with the people in their lives," wrote co-founder Mark Zuckerberg on the company's blog. "The rapid pace of our growth is humbling and exciting for us, and it affirms that people everywhere are realizing the power of staying connected to everything they care about on Facebook.

The quarter billion mark means 50 million new users signed up in the last 90-100 days, and continues the pattern of strong increases that saw Facebook surpass MySpace for the first time in monthly visitors in June.

But despite Facebook's gains, according to an informal poll Hypebot readers still believe, though sometimes reluctantly, that MySpace is an essential part of any marketing music plan.  Only 23% said they we're migrating their efforts to Facebook entirely while 33% said that MySpace still ruled music and another 44% saying that a pressence on both social networking sites was essential.

  1. Facebook isn’t currently doing a good job with music, they haven’t really provided any decent tools for artists. It’s a huge missed opportunity.
Facebook should partner with someone like Reverbnation or Garageband who already have large communities of artists and a suite of tools.
Once they address it, if they do it well, I can’t see artists bothering with Myspace anymore..

  2. Myspace only rules for SEO/SERPs placement. Get a myspace page, you’ve pretty much secured top rank for your name. Then, use the myspace to direct people SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN MYSPACE. Like Bandcamp, or better yet, your own website.
Facebook for music promo is still pretty much just a pain in the ass. And it’s only worth it if you’re doing shows constantly and your fanbase is in the 4 digit range…until then, you’ve just got (yet another) placeholder in a huge social network that nobody cares about much.
Facebook might be huge, but it’s also a huge walled garden. The only way around that is to pay them.

  3. Facebook is 300 million people doing a whole lot of nothing! I don’t care if your kid is potty trained, nor do I want to see pictures of your boring a** family barbecue or be friends with your mom.Facebook sucks, and as soon as they burn through the Russian money,it’s Chapter 11. NO ONE is on Facebook to buy anything, and the advertisers know this. When was the last time anyone you know bought something advertised on Facebook? With the latest phony click-thru numbers revealed,it’s just a matter of time.

  4. Never before in the history of mankind has it been easier to reach out to people all over the world. Online communitieslike MySpace, make meeting new friends with similar interests incredibly easy. MySpace is a great place to share tips, ideas and stories about the things you find most interesting. If you have a question about your hobby, you can easily find the answer through your network of members with similar interests.

  5. As much flak as they get for every little tweak they make to FB, it seems like each one is well thought out and is looking forward to the future. And every time, the criticism seems to die off a week or two afterwards and everyone has forgotten what they were complaining about. FB is doing an incredible job of avoiding feature-creep. The relatively small changes they do make are all incredibly value-adding. This kind of innovation while sticking to the company’s core competency will be what keeps FB a major player in the face of a plethora of competitors.
