I 've started working on a post of my Top Top 10 Milestones In Modern Music Marketing. I thinking about marketing campaigns or events that represent major shifts in how music is now marketed. Of course, there's Radiohead and Reznor, but what else?
At the moment I'm stuck at 7 or 8, with a few that could be squeezed off the list if stronger choices come to mind. So, please help me out a bit…
What Are Your Top Milestones In Modern Music Marketing History?
itunes (the good), napster (the bad) & crative commons based services like jamendo.com (hopefully the laughing third, more an upcoming milestone).
CDbaby – the start of true independent distribution
online music discovery services – thesixtyone, last.fm, the hype machince etc
creative commons licenseing for sure
radiohead free album – made worldwide headlines
NIN – in general. But i would say the whole free album etc
Permission Based Marketing – seth godin about 2000 i think it was
and the shift to the attention economy
i’d like to say spotify, but i dont think the model is quite right yet, so i would vote that down for the time being.

The arrival of huge lists of dicographies, reviews and album credits with the arrival of such sites as discogs.com and allmusic.com offering background info on who played what, enabling music fans to look for the work of their favourite musicians without having to read through booklets in a store.
Wider availability of used albums and them having cheaper prices by re-sellers having become easier to find on the internet.
