Sony PlayStation Exploring Cloud Music Service

RUMORS Rumors picked up by cNet and expanded on by PlayStationLifestyle.net point to Sony seriously exploring an extensive music service for its popular PlayStation gaming platform.

"Cloud" appears to be the name of the possibel service with sources suggesting a totally revamped device and Sony talking to but not yet cutting final deals with other major labels.  PSL imagines a music streaming service and cNet points to a download store suggesting that Sony may still be exploring which format PlayStation users crave. Either way, recent public statements from Sony executives suggest that any moves would be part of open platform with other devices as well.

  1. Gee, DUH. I worked at Sony Music and we suggested this to corporate as an alternative strategy to Connect and Labelgate and all their other crap strategies almost a decade ago. Couldn’t make it happen because the Playstation guys were very protective and wouldn’t work with any other Sony divisions. Gee, ten years and probably a hundred million dollars later, they finally realize this might be a good idea. Kudos, Sony!
    But hey, they’re not the only dummies. I had the same conversation with Microsoft before they launched Zune, told them they should build off the 360 platform, have a 360 branded music player instead of going with some obscure name and a standalone ecosystem. They still haven’t figured it out either.

  2. Alas, Sony infighting will prevent them from playing ball and this service will launch with only Sony/Epic/Columbia/550 product. It will be underdeveloped, overpriced and head-smackingly mis-targeted, and it will slowly die off as usual. When Microsoft looks remotely hip next to you, you’ve got a problem.
