Chris Knight: Real Music

image from www.cmt.com
I usually don't write about music; particularly not by artists that Skyline Music, the
booking agency that I run, represents. Hypebot is much more about the
music business and tech, but occasionally something moves me and I want to share it.

Last night, I saw Chris Knight perform as an acoustic duo at the wonderfully intimate Kirk Avenue Music Hall in our newly adopted home of Roanoke, VA.  Americana / outlaw country twang is usually not my thang, but Chris Knight won me over…bigtime.

If I had to describe him in two words, it would be “redneck Dylan”. He sings about the rural workingman’s hard life at a time when earning a living with your hands is more difficult than ever. But his lyrics transcend the normal songwriting rhymes to reach the level of poetry and his stage demeanor matches the songs –  both rough edges and sharp wit; ready for a fight and ready to extend a hand – all at the same time. Given the right breaks; Chris Knight could be an icon. Check him out.

  1. You are spot on. I am glad to see he is starting to get some more attention from sites like this one. Chris Knight is freakin awesome. I saw him in Rochester, MN about a month and a half ago (best $20 bucks i’ve spent in a long time). Everyone needs to pick up Trailer Tapes and Trailer II. The man could make a rock cry. Great songwriter. You have to wonder why you never hear him on big radio or on the CMA’s.

  2. Happy to hear that you’ve been moved by Chris Knight and I hope that you can discover some of the other Americana/twang country singer songwriters that are bubbling under the radar. We have a whole culture around that music populated with gifted writers and musicians who strive to be part of music’s middle class. I work with Scott Miller who is certainly a core artist in the “Americana” genre. We have been sucessfully going the indie artist route for a year now with our own label etc. I read hypebot regularly for it’s helpful information and industry overview.
Thanks for all you do to keep us informed in one convenient location.
