M Music & Musicians: A New Magazine Launches In The Middle Of The Recession

M Music & Musicians, a new multi-genre print music magazine, is set to to launch in January. In addition to traditional newsstand sales, M will be shipped with customer purchases made through major online musical gear retailer Sweetwater guaranteeing a built-in distribution of 160,000 starting with the first issue.

M MUSIC & MUSICIANS
Songs inspire us. Music moves us. M connects us.
Published 8 times per year, the magazine will showcase music journalists, photographers, designers and gear experts. Mmusicmag.com will add exclusive interviews, interactive elements and an online community.

The M team is led by Merlin David (formerly of Performing Songwriter);

editor Rick Taylor (Performing Songwriter, American Media, Inc.); creative director Terrill Thomas (T13 Media, AtomFilms); senior editor Chris Neal (Performing Songwriter, American Media, Inc.); technology editor Dave Jones (Performing Songwriter); and photographer Kent Kallberg.

“M will blow away the clutter of the complex musical landscape by going behind the scenes and between the notes with the artists, musicians, producers, songwriters and dealmakers who shape the music world,” says publisher and magazine veteran Merlin David. “M is all about the way music gets made, played, recorded, released and enjoyed.”

  1. Interesting. Releasing an outdated format about a struggling industry…
    I hope the online component is unique and sets itself up for success. The content sounds great, I’m just curious what kind of distro they’ll get in the current marketplace as well as if it can really hit it’s targeted demo properly.
    Getting posted here is a start I suppose!

  2. Blogs are free. However, people still pay for magazines off the stand & subscriptions. I’m sure these guys from Performing Songwriter are used to getting paid, but you are right, this may be a losing battle. Not exactly the business model I would pursue.

  3. Must be something in the air about magazines… I just received a free unsolicited issue of “Listen,” a classical music magazine which becomes the only US-based classical music magazine, I do believe.
    “Listen” got my address from ArkivMusic, I suspect. ArkivMusic is a classical music specialist online seller, and it feels like they are heavily involved in the magazine. (I’d guess ArkivMusic is the #2 seller of classical music beyond Amazon, now that the bookstore chains are fading.)
    They are offering a subscription deal: 4 quarterly issues for $10. I’ll probably take it. Might even order the few back issues. I love magazines, being an old wrinkly guy.

  4. i don’t believe print is dead. i currently have subscriptions to 3 magazines that i look forward to receiving on a monthly to bimonthly basis. i plan to subscribe to this one as well.

  5. So many music mags have fallen, it’s sad. But sounds like this is a concept that’ll work. i hope so. For music fans, nothing beats curling up a great magazine.

  6. I have subscribed to Performing Songwriter in the past and so am familiar with the quality of output this team is capable of. I eagerly look forward to this new magazine for musicians

  7. online may have the edge on breaking news but what has that got to do with the music industry? In every other way, paper wins hands down. This magazine’s high editorial standards and production values leave all blogs in the dust. You can take this out of your pocket- or bag- and read an article while waiting for the bus or a pizza. You can read it standing on the subway or laying on the beach. You can put it down and turn around without it being stolen! (and try swatting a fly with your ipad!)Long live print!! Long live M Music and Musicians.
