The Super Bowl Still Rocks

(UPDATED) One can certainly fault The Who for a lackluster (aka embarrassing) performance, but you have to admit the music stil matters to the Super Bowl. From the musical connection that many people feel with the winning city New Orleans to the songs used effectively in so many of the ads, the Super Bowl still rocks.

In addition to the worthy Saints, another real winner yesterday was Audi and its clever uses of a re-worked Cheap Trick classic "Dream Police". (Audi offers a free download of the remake here.)

  1. Embarrassing performance?
This has to be the first bad review that I came across of their show and you did it in such a nonchalant way like it was obviously a boring show. I don’t know what you were watching but Daltrey and Townshend pulled off all of the songs fantastically. It was a best possible scenario for the band and even the drummer had some stand out moments.
In comparison to halftime performances of the past, The Who’s yesterday was the least pathetic in recent memory. Maybe it was that despite their age, Townshend and Daltrey still moved around enough to put on a show reminiscent of footage from their heyday. Maybe it was seeing that Townshend could still play the guitar better than most people half his age.
I’m 18 years old and am much more an indie rock fan than a classic rock fan – I don’t want you to think I’m some old fart hanging on to the glory days. The bottom line is that the Who put on the best halftime show in my 18 years last night for one essential reason: unlike many of the “classic” acts that the Superbowl has booked… The Who are still RELEVANT.
I don’t even know what the rest of your article is about. If you knew anything about journalism you’d know not to start your first sentence of with such an offensive generality.

  2. Guess I have an entirely different view of what’s embarrassing since I found the ad you are praising to be exactly that, not to mention demeaning/offensive to those who do chose a green lifestyle.

  3. definitely impressive that they’re doing it at their age, but daltrey’s pipes aren’t what they once were. also, you can’t exactly smash your equipment at halftime of the super bowl. i’m with bruce if that’s part of his reference…
