WOXY.com Goes Off The Air

Freeform alternative online radio stalwart WOXY.com stopped broadcasting yesterday just 6 months after the station relocated from Ohio to Austin. Launched in 1983 as WOXY-FM at 97.7 FM in Oxford, Ohio,  "The Future of Rock & Roll" became one of the first commercial radio stations in the United States to completely transition from terrestrial FM radio to broadcasting solely on the net.

image from kapetank.files.wordpress.com LA based Future Sound which bought the station from Lala last year said they had run out of funding. "We've been looking at partnerships and the possibility of a sale, and
had an eleventh-hour deal that fell through on Sunday," partner John Mascarenhas told Austin 360 . "There are a lot of people fighting for a
little bit of money."

WOXY Listeners, Fans and Friends…

Due to current economic realities and the lack of ongoing funding for WOXY's operations, we've been forced to suspend our live broadcasts as of March 23rd. We're continuing to explore options to keep The Future of Rock and Roll alive. For business inquiries, please contact Bryan Jay (bryan@woxy.com) or John at Future Sounds (john@futuresounds.com).

Thanks for your years of dedicated support.

  1. Bummer. I rarely listened, but that WOXY brand has got to be worth SOMETHING to someone.

  2. I listened. Their DJs turned me on to music that I purchased. I wear my WOXY t-shirts. This sucks.
I’m still hopeful someone will scoop them up though.
