Dear Marketers, Just Using A Hit Song In Your Commercial Isn’t Enough.

In fact, the results can sometimes be a little creepy.

Such is the case in this spot in which the Red Stripe Beer Ambassador makes his singing debut with a cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's hit "Relax". The results are bad: bad song, bad execution, and bad singing. Bad idea.

  1. I think you’re dead on with the idea. Would love to see a feature article about brands “whoring out” music to peddle their sometimes mediocre products.
It’s not a sure bet that music + brand = instant coolness

  2. I think it works just fine. It’s funny because it’s bad and or corny…because it’s funny people will relate to it and remember the brand.

  3. again, WHY DON’T YOU EVER DO ANY RESEARCH? stop spewing opinions if you want to have any sort of credibility. this clip isn’t even what the tv spots will actually end up looking like, is part of an ongoing ad campaign to promote responsible drinking, and was directed by the dudes behind the Time & Eric awesome show on adult swim. just because you don’t like it, doesn’t mean it’s bad. it’s supposed to be a tad “creepy” as you put it – that’s what makes it funny and interesting.

  4. It’s so bad it’s good. I love the parody. They obviously did not take this too seriously. I think it’s brilliant. if you have ever been to Jamaica you’d know how common it is for pop songs to be put to reggae beats and steel drums. Reminds me of a cruise I took when I was 23. sitting in the sun drinking ice cold beers and participating in the lido deck limbo contest.
    I think it’s perfect!

  5. When you want to “Go”????
I’m never going… what’s the opposite of that? Oh yeah, it’s come. Perhaps I’m misspelling this however.
Regardless, it’s all lost on me. I now have no desire to drink a red stripe. Good “going” guys.
