Some Initial Thoughts On iTunes 10, Ping & Yesterday’s Apple Music Announcements

image from www.techdigest.tv It will take some time to digest eaxctly what the announcements that Steve Jobs made yesterday mean to artists and the music industry, but here are a few initial reactions:

  • It amazes me just how far in front of the curve Apple always is.  And yet on closer examination, what they announce as revolutionary is almost always simply at the front edge of evolutionary.  The music industry could learn from this.

  • With its new Ping social network Apple is continuing to expand its closed ecosystem. That ticks me off enough to not sign up. And yet Ping presents a huge opportunity for music discovery … and for music marketing.
  • Steve Jobs failed to mention it, but the new iTunes concert info is "powered" by Live Nation. Smart move for both, but its not great news for those fans and promoters who want nothing to do with giving info to the concert giant.
  • Virtually every Apple music announcement that you saw yesterday was set-up for a cloud based iTunes music service.

  1. The big drawback in Ping that I see is that unless youre an “established” artist, there isnt a clear way for thsoe of us who are on itunes to create or control an artist profile page. Until they enable that, folks will still use myspace music.

  2. When I first tried out Genius I thought it was terrible because it didn’t recognize the majority of my collection. However, now it recognizes a much larger proportion, and I really like it. I wonder if Ping will be that way. Of course, the most important thing that needs to develop is that all artists should be able to have an account. That is what interests me — it would be nice to check in (lurker mode) and see what is up with all of my favorite artists. Facebook has not been ideal for that because I would prefer to keep that about personal friends and family.
I am creeped out about people knowing what I have downloaded, so using it like a feed of artist news suits me fine, if it eventually develops into that.

  3. I was thinking the exact same thing about a cloud based service when I saw the presentation yesterday. I wonder what their motive is for not launching a music streaming service right now.

  4. you’re an idiot. the biggest FAULT with ping is that Jobs & Apple have completely screwed up regarding their integration with facebook.
And cloud based services, just because you like them, are NOT the future of music. 30%+ of americans don’t even have high-speed internet connections – OR WANT THEM. and those are people who actually do still pay for music.

  5. HH you are a joker. You are wrong about the integration w FB being the biggest fault and you sound like a second grader with your 30% rationale. The only people who are keeping the CD biz alive are country music fans and that number w/out internet is closer to 50%.
Morons like you shouldn’t be allowed to pollute the HB space.
    Freedom of Speech, ain’t it a Bitch…
