What Physics Can Teach Musicians About Marketing

194019_254x191(UPDATE)  In this TED talk, Dan Colbey, appointed director of marketing at Google for central and northern Europe, instructs us, and musicians included, what physics can teach us about marketing. His first point highlights the connection between Newton’s Law and branding. To which he explains that, “The more massive a brand, the more baggage it has, the more force is needed to change its positioning.”

  1. Very entertaining! This reenforces the need for a strategic planning of your brand as a musician.
Take Panic! at the Disco as an example. They changed their name to Panic at the Disco and adapted their music style, after they released a massively successful album. This didn’t last long, as they reverted back to the old name and the band/brand broke up.
It seems there wasn’t much force behind this repositioning, mainly because the band members themselves had split ideas of the band’s brand.
Anyway, great presentation by Dan Colbey and a very interesting connection of physics with marketing.
    Cheers
