Fans Raising $10M To Get Weezer To Stop Making Lame Records & Break Up , Band Responds

image from t0.gstatic.com A campaign has been started to pay Weezer to break up. "Every year, Rivers Cuomo swears that he’s changed, and that their new album is the best thing that he’s done since “Pinkerton,” and what happens? Another pile of crap…" says Brian Burns on fundraising site The Point. "This is an abusive relationship, and it needs to stop now."  Fans are pledging, and Weezer has responded:

"if they can make it 20, we'll do the 'deluxe breakup'!",  tweeted Weezer's Patrick Wilson. As one fan tweeted this morning, maybe we've finally found a cure for the ills of the music business. We'll just pay to make the lame stuff go away

Here's the complete fundraising pitch:

I have never been a fan of this band. I think that they are pretty much horrible, and always have been. Even in the early 90’s.

But this isn’t about me. This is about the Weezer fans. They are our brothers and sisters, our friends, our lovers.

Every year, Rivers Cuomo swears that he’s changed, and that their new album is the best thing that he’s done since “Pinkerton,” and what happens? Another pile of crap like “Beverly Hills” or “I’m Your Daddy.”

This is an abusive relationship, and it needs to stop now.

I am tired of my friends being disappointed year after year.

I am tired of endless whimsical cutesy album covers and music videos.

I’m sick of hearing about whatever this terrible (and yes, even if you like the early stuff, you should be able to admit that they are wretched now) excuse for a band is up to these days.

If all 852,000 of you (really?) who bought “Pinkerton” pitch in $12, we will meet our al.

I beg you, Weezer. Take our money and disappear.

  1. I may have got my economics wrong, but wouldn’t it be easier for all those Weezer fans simply not to buy the albums? It’s $12 cheaper.

  2. Certainly it would be cheaper, but this clearly isn’t about the money. This story has gotten a lot of play the past couple days, and it was a successful stunt to make an important point. Weezer is great at harnessing year-old nostalgia for week-long internet memes and exploiting them for maximum irony and, as a result, getting a lot of attention. I admire their ability to adapt to a changing landscape, but unlike bands like Arcade Fire (who also have harnessed the internet’s abilities brilliantly), they haven’t retained much of a musical identity that people can get passionate about. This seems like a fine way to make that point. Unless, of course, this is just a publicity stunt to attract more people to The Point’s fundraising site. That would be extra ironic, since it would be a very Weezerian way to get attention.

  3. grow up you arseholes. some bands love to play and make music. fans have the option to buy or not bother. their new album Hurley is an absolute monster btw.
