Old-School Major Label Executive Knows His Stuff

image from www.erichufschmid.net In just about any good rant on the record industry, a reader can expect to find two elements. First, that record labels are evil empires that prey on our children and sell them the image of Hannah Montana. Second, that they’re run by a bunch of old and struggling dinosaurs that have no idea what they’re doing. They’re trapped in a tar pit and have about as much chance for survival as a baby Tyrannosaurus. Jac Holzman, founder of Electra Records, is not one of those cases. In this video, he rather lucidly describes how to market music and why the industry is changing.

Thanks to The New Rockstar Philosophy for rekindling the flame on this one.

  1. I LOVE this! I had seen this before and I knew Mr. Holzman was on the right track when he said ‘the first filters are the blogs’… couldn’t agree more. Someone has to be the taste-maker in the new music industry, and it sure as hell ain’t MTV or terrestrial radio.

  2. I remember Jac from the 80s when I was at WEA. Most of the corp. record cats thought he was weird back then. He was and still seems to be on it.
