36% of U.S. Mobile Users Have A Smartphone

image from www.google.com The music industry has just begun to tap into the potential of uibiquitous smartphones. Results of Nielsen’s latest survey suggests understanding the consumer landscape for mobile apps begins and understanding of the Apple iOS and Google Android ecosystems.

  • 36% of U.S. mobile consumers now have smartphones
  • Consumers with Apple iOS (iPhone) and Google Android OS mobile phones represent the majority of the smartphone market in the U.S. and 74% of mobile app downloaders

  • App users with Apple iOS and Android OS smartphones have more applications on their mobile phones than those with other kinds of smartphones, with an average of 48 apps on iPhones and 35 apps on Android phones.
  • App downloaders with Blackberry RIM smartphones only had an average of 15 apps on their phones.
  • Apple and Droid users use their apps more often: 68% of app downloaders with iPhones and 60% of those with Android phones reported using their mobile apps multiple times a day compared to 45% for Blackberry users.

  1. So in utilizing expensive apps you are completely missing 64% of your potential market. Nor does the data above reflect which of their apps people ‘use multiple times a day”. Usually it’s something like the traffic and weather apps.
    Indie musicians would be better off utilizing SMS text messaging which can reach 98% of the mobile consumer market (as well as smart phone users ) for substantially less p/month with no development costs.

  2. While SMS is a great way to connect with fans, it’s far less engaging that having your own app, and serves a much different purpose. For artists to have a complete mobile marketing strategy, they need to use both – native/web apps for engagement and SMS for calls to action / geo-targeted news. It’s not really a matter of one or the other, and artists can no longer overlook the importance of having your own app, especially since it doesn’t cost a lot to have an artist app developed these days.

  3. I’ve notice a nice spike in my stations stats by simply creating a mobile friendly station page for my stream with tune in links for the Iphone, Android and Blackberry..so the mobile platform for music should not be overlooked
