Paid Content Passes Piracy On Web For First Time

image from www.clker.com For the first time in the history of the internet, traffic in paid content has passed piracy according to the Spring Traffic Report from Sandvine. Netflix provided the tipping point as the movie service mades up 22.2% of all U.S. broadband traffic compared to BitTorrent’s 21.6%. At peak times, Netflix can consume 30%.of all traffic. The lesson for music? There are some things people will pay for on the web.  The big question is how to make music one of them. Here's a chart of peak internet usage:

  1. i feel like its pretty simple. netflix is a cloud meets pandora meets a playlist. if everyone can get their heads out of their asses and just understand we’re gonna have to share revenue from a subscription based model instead of earning money from individual albums the problem will be solved. money from a model like that is better than no money at all.

  2. Aside from making music one of the major categories, music could be integrated better into the existing categories. Gaming in particular is a good arena for music’s presence to grow.

  3. This appears to be based on bandwidth usage, if that is the case this says very little about the actual amount of content being pirated vs. paid for on the web. Watching something on Netflix takes up a lot more bandwidth over a longer period of time than downloading music.
Regardless, we probably will move towards a subscription based model. A lot of people seem to think it will prove to be a useful revenue stream, but I suggest everyone takes another look at this chart:

  4. I find it amusing that you are so ‘resigned’ with this realization. The reality is that (once this is the norm and the volume of streaming users has tipped over) the money will be much better than it ever was. I just wish everyone could see this eventuality as the golden goose that it is instead of feeling like we’re being dragged into a “it’s better than nothing” situation. JUST DO THE MATH and you’ll see it, plain as day.
Seriously, It’s like trying convince a 5 year-old that he really will like ice cream if he just tries it… but he refuses to taste it. So frustrating.
P.S. It’s worth noting that once streaming music does tip over, “piracy” will drop like a rock.

  5. how much are indie filmmakers making from netflix streaming? Buehler? Buehler? Buehler?

  6. We refuse to taste it b/c once the deal is done, we won’t be tasting any ice cream. Only the vultures in their suits will taste the ice cream, through the magic of “misappropriation of funds”.
