Shazam Drives $300 Million A Year In iTunes, AmazonMP3 Sales

image from betanews.comDozens of startups are searching for the holy grail of music discovery leading to purchase and many thousands of artists and labels are hoping they'll find it. Other than perhaps YouTube, no one is currently doing it better than Shazam.

Shazam says users are tagging 10 million songs, shows and ads a day. They're also buying what they've tagged.  Clicking through to digital stores like iTunes and Amazon MP3, Shazam users are buying $300 million worth a year. The vast majority is music, says the company. TV, films and apps are a small but growing percentage.

"We don't publish our monthly actives, but I can say that weekly actives are in the tens of millions, and monthly actives are many tens of millions," Shazam's executive vice president of marketing David Jones told the crowd assembled for The Guardian at Mobile World Congress.

"20% of all iPhones in the US used Shazam last month, and in some European countries like France, Germany and the UK we're seeing closer to 30% or 40%," said Jones  "And we're currently adding at least 2m new users a week, and more than 3 millionsome weeks."
