3 Years Ago This Week Spotify Launched In U.S.

image from upload.wikimedia.orgHello America. Spotify here.

That was the blog post headline three years ago today on July 14th, 2011 when Spotify launched in the U.S. Since then Spotify has become the largest streaming music service in the U.S. with 3 million paid subscribers here. Globally, Spotify has 10 million paying subscribers and more than 40 million active users across 56 markets.

What will the streaming music marketplace look like in three more years?

Competition is increasing with Beats Music looking how they can prosper under new parent Apple, Rdio and Rhapsody pushing for mobile carrier deals, Amazon and Google continuing their own experiments, and YouTube ready to enter the battlefield.

Will Spotify still be #1 in three years? What do you predict?

  1. Brand loyalty has a strong effect. They will be fine unless a sleeker brand presents a cooler alternative.

  2. Hard to believe it has only been three years. It feels like an eternity. I wonder who will come up with next disruptive concept for turning gold into lead.
Nice work guys. Good luck with that IPO. Goldman Sahs yeah?
