Civil Rights Group Pressures GM Over Kid Rock Tour Sponsorship
After Kid Rock announced his plans to continue flying the confederate battle flag at concerts, a group of activist investors is pressuring General Motors over their sponsorship of the artist.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Charles Williams II, president of the Michigan Chapter of the National Action Network and pastor of King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit called for General Motors to pull support from Kid Rock's tour and plans to meet with General Motors on Thursday.
"We have been in touch with Reverend Williams, and representatives from Chevrolet will be meeting with him later this week to better understand his concerns. We need to let some open and constructive dialogue occur as a first step, and we'll go from there," General Motors said in a statement to the DFP.
Unlike many individuals and organizations in the U.S., Kid Rock has yet to formally distance himself from the flag in the wake of the tragic church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. However, while Rock has toured with the flag displayed on stage in the past, it has not been included on his current tour.
"The only flag on stage during the Chevy-sponsored summer concert tour is the American flag, and to our knowledge, Kid Rock has not used the Confederate flag on stage for several years," the GM statement read. "We are committed to our sponsorship of Kid Rock's summer tour and are confident that he will provide his fans, many of whom are proud Chevrolet owners, with a spectacular concert experience that celebrates American Freedom." -via Celebrity Access
