Down Under, Streaming Is Up, Downloads Are Down

1In an extension of a music industry consumer trend seen in the United States, it seems our neighbors to the south are embracing the streaming age, as Australians increasingly eschew CDs and downloads in exchange for streaming.

OK, not a big surprise here. Over the last two years, more Australians are streaming and fewer are purchasing downloads and CDs. It matters because Australia punches way above its weight in terms of recorded music revenue. The country, slightly smaller than the continental US, has only 29 million people but is a top 10 recorded music market and a proving ground for streaming services. Samsung’s Milk Music, Guvera, MixRadio, and JB Hi-Fi shut down earlier this year. Among the services currently available there are Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal, iHeartRadio, and Google Play Music.
