Quick HitsCanadian music rights organization SOCAN has launched Dataclef, a new international services arm that includes a comprehensive music database from more than 200 territories worldwide. Already on board as a client is the Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS), that country’s only registered copyright society administering musical works.
 
• Berklee College Of Music has named Kim Perlak as chair of the Guitar Department. Perlak joined Berklee in 2013 as assistant chair of guitar. She becomes the first woman to chair the department, and only the fourth person to hold the position since the college added guitar as a principal instrument in 1962. Perlak now leads the college’s second largest instrument group with nearly 1,000 students.

Merlin payments to member labels in Japan are up 70% year over year, according to the indie music licensor, as the local music market finally begins to transition from physical and downloads to streaming.
