Spotify Expands Free Tier

Spotify is expanding its free ad-supported streaming tier to smart speakers from Amazon, Sonos, and Bose. 

The addition of the free tier features – each of which gives free users one less reason to upgrade to the paid Premium tier – comes as Spotify is in the midst of licensing renegotiations with the major labels. The labels have been openly pushing the streamer to increase free to paid conversion rates.

Spotify free users in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S, can now ask Alexa to play Today’s Top Hits, their Discover Weekly, or a custom-made playlist on their Amazon Echo or Fire TV.

Spotify Connect also now works with all Sonos smart speakers and Bose smart speakers and soundbars.
