#BlackOutTuesday Puts Music Industry On Pause As Apple, Spotify, UMG, Sony, WMG Support #TheShowMustBePaused Campaign
Apple Music, Spotify, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music are among the scores of companies joining the music industry Black Out Tuesday campaign to pause activity today, Tuesday, June 2nd following the death of George Floyd while in police custody and the nationwide protests that followed.
Virtually every major music company including booking agencies CAA, UTA, ICM and APA, Hypebot publisher Bandsintown and independents including Kobalt joined the major labels and streaming services.
Messages began circulating on Friday eventing May 29th using the #THESHOWMUSTBEPAUSED hashtag calling for “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community.”
“Tuesday, June 2nd is meant to intentionally disrupt the work week,” wrote Atlantic Records exec Jamila Thomas and Platoon’s Brianna Agyemang who were the first to call for Black Out Tuesday. “The music industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. An industry that has profited predominantly from Black art. Our mission is to hold the industry at large, including major corporations + their partners who benefit from the efforts, struggles and successes of Black people accountable. … This is not just a 24-hour initiative. We are and will be in this fight for the long haul. A plan of action will be announced.”
In the hours that followed many artists, record labels and others in the music industry added their support.
