How Camilo uses Music + Talk to connect with his fans

While the sudden onset of the pandemic meant Camilo was forced to scrap a tour supporting his 2020 album, the Latin Grammy-winning artist has found another way to forge a personal connection with is fans, using Spotify’s Music + Talk feature

The Latin Grammy-winning musician released his debut album in 2020 and used Spotify’s new audio format to reach his fans during the quarantine.

“Music shapes and transforms societies, countries, culture, everything. It not only changed my life, but it changed the world.” For Colombian songwriter, performing artist, and producer Camilo, his artistry is personal, powerful, and something meant to be shared with listeners all over the globe. A behind-the-scenes hitmaker who has stepped into the spotlight as an artist himself, Camilo first made his mark lending his writing talents to luminaries of Latin music today like Becky G, Bad Bunny, and Karol G. With the release of his debut album, the aptly titled Por Primera Vez (For the First Time), last year was pivotal for his career as an artist.

Released on Mar. 9, 2020, the album’s title track and single featured Camilo’s wife as of February of that year, Venezuelan singer, and actor, Evaluna Montaner. With his singles getting love on Spotify playlists like ¡Viva Latino! (and he himself madly in love with his new bride), 2020 was supposed to be the year that he toured the world and got to reach out and touch his fans IRL. “We started releasing music, and then our main focus was my first album [Por Primera Vez], and we released it right when the pandemic started,” Camilo says, recounting his disappointment at the time. “We were like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ Our expectations were to release the album and start traveling everywhere to connect with the people but when the pandemic started we were like, “That’s it, we’re done. This album is not going to connect [with the people] . . .” Despite not being able to tour, Camilo’s debut album had all of the success he and his team had hoped for and more as his song “Favorito” was a runaway hit and his collaborations with Ozuna (“Despeinada”) and Rauw Alejandro (“Tattoo – Remix”) only added to his momentum.

Camilo’s music was out in the world but he sought a deeper, more intimate connection with his fans, collectively known as “La Tribu” or “The Tribe,” in lieu of live performances. He found his solution in Spotify’s newest audio experience, Music + Talk. Not quite a podcast and not quite a playlist, Music + Talk shows bring together music and spoken-word commentary in one harmonious listening experience. Creators can express themselves in talk segments that play alongside full tracks selected from Spotify’s extensive catalog of more than 70 Million songs, making the potential for compelling combinations of talk and music endless.

The Spanish language show Camilo created is called “El Rincón de La Tribu con Camilo” or “The Tribe’s Corner with Camilo.” Described as a space for Camilo and his fans, La Tribu, to “talk into each other’s ears, [while] breathing the same air” safely and virtually, El Rincón de la Tribu launched on Nov. 23 — just a few days after Camilo’s Latin Grammy “Best Pop Song” win for his song “Tutu.” Since then, his show has become one of the most-followed Music + Talk shows on Spotify. On his show, Camilo has given listeners a behind-the-scenes look at his Latin Grammys experience, talked inspiration with collaborators like Rauw Alejandro, introduced his “El Buzón” fanmail segment, and given fans a peek into his personal life with appearances by his wife and collaborator, Evaluna. Another thing Camilo’s been able to do with Music + Talk is give fans more context about his music, including his hits “Ropa Cara” and “Machu Picchu” and his latest album, Mis Manos, which, as of March 17, 2021, is currently at No. 9 on Spotify’s Weekly Top Albums Chart.

“My music was the soundtrack of a lot of people’s quarantine,” says a grateful Camilo. “People [were] in their houses having bad energies, bad moments, and my music was the reason for them to dance again, to smile again. So that changed my life.” His music and his words on “El Rincon …” have no doubt changed the lives of his Tribe too.
