Music Business

Spotify is closing next week, so I’m closing Spotify [and you should join me]

Spotify is closing next week to give their employees a “wellness” break. So in return, I’ve decided to close Spotify.

By close, I mean closing the Spotify app and trying other music streaming services.

To be clear this is not a protest or a boycott. Spotify has been my go-to music app since before it launched officially in the US, and it’s quite likely to be so after the experiment is over.

But as a heavy Spotify user, I realized that I know far less about the user experience on its competitors. That’s not an acceptable gap in knowledge for anyone (aka everyone) in the music business who is concerned with music marketing, discovery, consumption, and monetization.

So next week I’m closing Spotify and opening Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, and buzzy free music streaming service TREBEL and sharing my experiences

I’ll be sharing my experiences as a user and music fan along the way.

Consider joining me to try out alternatives to your regular streamer and sharing what you’ve learned.

PS: I know that I’ve left of TIDAL, Napster, and countless other global and regional services. But I had to start somewhere and if you find this experiment useful I’ll extend it to include others.

PPS: Who do you think I’m missing?
