Spotify’s Daniel EK and Phoebe Bridgers must sit for depositions, judges rule

Judges in two separate cases have ruled that Spotify CEO Daniel EK and indie star Phoebe Bridgers must deposed. Both had sought to block the depositions.

Ek ‘s deposition comes as part of an ongoing legal battle with Eminem music publisher Eight Mile.

The music publisher sued Spotify in 2019 over allegations that the streamer had not properly licensed the rapper’s music for its US service and therefore liable for copyright infringement.

Spotify lawyers argued unsuccessfully that he had no direct knowledge of the matter and besides he has a lot on his plate. The judge rejected the arguments writing:

“The court credits Spotify’s assertion that [he] is very busy indeed. Yet, the issue of proper licensing relationships with the artists whose work comprises the entirety of Spotify’s business and its sole product is surely also a matter of importance to Spotify, worthy of some of Mr Ek’s time and attention.”

In LA, a judge ruled that indie artist and label head Phoebe Bridgers must be interviewed as part of a defamation lawsuit filed by producer Chris Nelson which Bridgers called a “thinly veiled harassment.”

“Judge Curtis A. Kin agreed with Nelson’s argument that a deposition was necessary before the judge decides whether to dismiss his lawsuit, which claims Bridgers defamed him by echoing accusations of abuse made against him by another woman,” reported Billboard.
