Don’t know what to post on social media? 10 ideas for musicians

Making music already uses up enough of our creative juices, so constantly coming up with social media content can be challenging. Here are 10 prompts you can use for your next post when you’ve run out of ideas.

A conversation that I have frequently with managers, agents and music execs revolves around the fact that sometimes it’s like pulling teeth to get artists to post on social media. Many artists (especially older ones) don’t want to hear it, but a social presence is almost mandatory today because the music industry expects it. This isn’t a problem for some artists, but for many the main reason they don’t post is that they don’t know what to post about. I’ve written about this before, but these 10 prompts can give any artist enough content for a month or more. Here we go:

  • 1. What artist influenced you the most?
  • 2. How did you come up with the idea for your latest song?
  • 3. Show your home studio or rehearsal space and explain your choices.
  • 4. Share a recent success.
  • 5. Share a quick tip that you’ve learned.
  • 6. Share something that you musically struggle with.
  • 7. Why do you love what you do?
  • 8. Share a musical preference (guitar strings, vocal mic, plugin, etc.)
  • 9. Post a fan testimonial.
  • 10. What motivates you?

It’s About The Music

If you notice none of the 10 prompts include anything that’s deeply personal. That’s intentional in that it’s a lot safer staying on a musical level since that’s how most fans relate to you. If your brand is built around your personal beliefs, then the posting strategy would be different and include your personal thoughts.

That said, one of the problems with getting too personal while posting is that it may help you build a following, but those people will probably be more interested in you than in your music. If music is your main focus, best to keep it there in your posts as well.

If there are things that you absolutely must get off your chest online, the best way to do that is to either get a burner account and use that for personal posts, or in the case of Facebook, use your profile page for your own thoughts and keep them off your fan page.
