The importance of Merch Sales in today’s music economy

For this week’s Flashback Friday, we turn to the brilliant James Shotwell for a post on the importance of merchandise sales in today’s music economy that is just as relevant as the day Hypebot first posted it in 2019.

As income from music streaming may be making the major labels rich, but for most musicians they don’t come close to replacing the income earned from a $15 CD sale.

That’s turned merch sales – once a supplementary revenue stream –  into a main source of income.
