[**Sophie’s Body**](https://www.bandsintown.com/a/15538755-sophie's-body?utm%5Fsource=hypebot&came%5Ffrom=900) is not an emo band. They are a blunt-force wall of sound that “hits you in the head.” Self-described as *"bubble-grunge,"* (we talk about that), this Boston-based quartet helmed by Sophie McMinn feels like it was both cooked up and chewed up by the DIY grunge scenes in NYC and all around the East Coast.

Sophie’s Body is an undeniable force in the live music scene, and they're currently on a massive tour in support of their nearly out new album, *Zero.* They channel piercing lyricism and intricate melodies into a total release of everything eating you alive. And speaking of things eating them alive, every one of the band members is asked below to give their thoughts on which animal would be the worst to eat you alive.

Here's our conversation. Enjoy!

**Hypebot: Hey Sophie’s Body, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions. Congrats on launching your debut record at the end of this month. It’s a great record, so much energy and creative top-lining, some great spoken word moments. How long did this take to make?**

Sophie: "Thank you! The concept of time is difficult, since I didn’t really set out to make an album when I started writing this cycle of songs. That would have been helpful, I assume. Most of these songs came to me over the summer of 2025, but it’s not like I put on my album writing boots and got down to it."

We recorded for a week in Brooklyn in November after touring in October, and we mixed and mixed for one million years until we mastered around February. So a long time? But also not really that long at all."

**H: Did you have a vision for how the record would flow before recording, or during, or did it come together after the studio sessions?**

Sophie: "For me, it wasn’t until we were in the actual studio that I started to believe that this was going to work. It’s really hard to get out of my own head, and I have to thank Justin Termotto the GOAT for producing this record with us, and catching my blind spots. Dylan on the drums also is a consistent cheerleader when I get doubtful, thanks Dylan. Our song 'Socialyte Zero' would not be on this album if Dylan didn’t tell me he liked it."

As far as actual song order goes, we were listening to the record in this random vegan restaurant in Burlington, VT before a gig, and I was freaking out because I couldn’t find an order that flowed to me, but it turned out to be another case of overthinking it (insert trademark here), and we collectively came up with the flow we have now!"

There was of course debate on the opening track, but we decided that real fans will listen to the whole thing anyways so it’ll be okay if we mess that up."

**H: You call your genre “bubble-grunge” - what does that mean to you? Has Boston helped shape your sound or mostly influences from other places and times?**

Sophie: "'Bubble-grunge' is the best descriptor I have for what we sound like — we play distorted guitars, but I refuse to sacrifice a catchy hook, I’m not too cool for a chorus."

**H: What’s the story behind the band name?**

Sophie: "I thought it would be funny to put *'COME SEE SOPHIE’S BODY LIVE'* on a show flyer. And it got kinda out of hand I guess. Ha."

> *"We play distorted guitars, but I refuse to sacrifice a catchy hook, I’m not too cool for a chorus."*

**H: Starting like NOW you’ve got** [**a lot of gigs across the country**](https://www.bandsintown.com/a/15538755-sophie's-body?utm%5Fsource=hypebot&came%5Ffrom=900)**. How do you prepare for tours usually, is it sort of the same old rehearsals or are there tech things you need to take care of, new arrangements, adding material to the repertoire?**

Dylan: "I feel like we don’t stress about the music, with all the gigs we’ve played leading up to the tour. All the gear is really what we need to worry about. I don’t know."

Sophie: "Yeah it’s definitely mostly tech stuff, but also random things like *'hey can our car fit this amount of stuff in it?'* I think the last thing we worry about is the set. We rehearse a lot, we gig a lot — if we have a special set change, or new music to workshop, we give that proper time and attention for sure."

For the tour, it’s mostly just how many shirts we need to sell to afford one sandwich per person, and what address we need to drive to by what time."

**H: What’s something you’ve learned by spending time on the road?**

Dylan: "You have to be able to get through SO MANY gigs, but you still have to be able to make every gig into the most important gig when you’re playing it. You gotta keep that, but make sure that you can still play tomorrow."

Harry: "I miss my family."

Sophie: "A seedy gas station way out in the boonies feels a lot safer than a city."

Adam: "The most beautiful places are where you’d never expect."

**H: Are there songs you think connect better to a live audience than the recorded version does?**

Sophie: "Off the bat, if I don’t see your face in front of my face, it is very hard for me to believe you are real. I think literally every song we play is better live, because there's always the possibility that we duel to the death, which is exciting. Music is this crazy intangible thing, but being at a show is the closest thing that you’ll get to touching it, y'know?"

Don’t get me wrong, I’m in my headphones like, always. But putting my body in a room with other bodies and listening to it live makes my headphone time even more special. :)"

**H: What do you like to do on your days off on tour?**

Dylan: "Move around a bit, see something local– experience something other than a car. I like seeing trees in a place that I’ve never seen before. See some trees."

Harry: "I like playing the bass :D I like calling my family."

Sophie: "I like to take a long walk away from everyone else, because personal space is apparently a finite resource."

Adam: "I don’t even remember."

> *"I feel like I could scheme my way out of the wilderness by just hailing a cab or something. But also I’m not past cannibalism if it came to that."*

**H: As a fan, who are some artists you’ve seen play live recently that have blown you away?**

Sophie: "Lip Critic, Showing Teeth, and Knocked Loose."

Dylan: "LCD Soundsystem, Sir Echo, and Showing Teeth."

Harry: "Fcukers, Pat Metheny, and Mononeon."

Adam: "Geese."

**H: What’s your favorite post-concert food to eat?**

Dylan: "A steak and cheese empanadas that they had after this gig we played in Potsdam, NY – or more generally a middle-eastern grain bowl."

Harry: "Cheesesteak."

Sophie: "So much water. I think I’ll also die by the sword of chicken caesar salad with wayyyyy too much chicken on it – it hits so hard."

Adam: "Wendy’s bro."

**H: Which member of the band would survive longest if the van broke down in the middle of nowhere, and who would be dead meat?**

Dylan: "I think I would survive the longest, personally. I think Sophie would freeze, but my initial thought was Harry."

Sophie: "I feel like I could scheme my way out of the wilderness by just hailing a cab or something. But also I’m not past cannibalism if it came to that. I think Harry or Adam probably would be first to go."

Harry: "I think Dylan. I think me or Adam would bite it."

Adam: "I would survive the longest. And Harry would probably perish but I feel like that’s mean to say haha."

**H: What would be the worst animal to be eaten by?**

Dylan: "A bear because they just hold you down and eat you — they don’t kill you first. Wait actually maggots.

Harry: "I hate thinking about this."

Sophie: "Rats probably. Elaborating on this would be frivolous. Rats 100%."

Adam: "Orca. Have you seen their mouths??"
