Few details of the acquisition were shared, but Soundtrap, founded in 2012, has raised $8.5 million, including a $6 million Series A last year.

For now at least, Soundtrap will continue to offer its an online collaborative music recording studio platform that enables users to record, edit and share recordings. Soundtrap has become particularly popular at schools, for music teaching and for creating podcasts. "So Soundtrap – including all our staff – will continue to revolutionize the music-making process for consumers, educators and students from within the Spotify family."It's unclear exactly how Soundtrap will be integrated with Spotify. But it's not hard to imagine that audio created using the online studio – including music and podcasts – could be uploaded directly to Spotify, thus bypassing traditional labels, distributors and aggregators.
