Now it appears companies may start working to push a much older technology on consumers, in the form of **automated chatbots**.

Guest Post by **Cherie Hu** on [Forbes](http://www.forbes.com/sites/cheriehu/2016/10/26/on-demand-the-art-and-science-of-the-music-chatbot/?ref=hypebot.com#310379d66381)Over the past decade, tech companies have been rallying millions of consumers behind the concept of music as an automated service, rather than as a static product. Online radio and on-demand streaming and curation services have overtaken physical formats as the leading music crowd-pleasers and industry moneymakers. So, what’s next in the automated music craze? Ironically, a technology that’s already been around for half a century: chatbots.First theorized and developed in the 1960s by the likes of Alan Turing and Joseph Weizenbaum, chatbots have been attracting unprecedented hype this year due to the rising popularity of messaging apps, which now [eclipse](https://medium.com/chris-messina/2016-will-be-the-year-of-conversational-commerce-1586e85e3991?ref=hypebot.com) social networks in monthly active users (3 billion vs 2.5 billion users, respectively). Facebook’s Messenger platform alone not only has [more](http://venturebeat.com/2016/07/20/facebook-messenger-hits-1-billion-monthly-active-users-now-powers-10-of-all-voip-calls/?ref=hypebot.com) active users than the number of active iPhone [owners](http://www.apple.com/newsroom/2016/07/apple-celebrates-one-billion-iphones.html?ref=hypebot.com), but also is cannibalizing other aspects of Facebook’s business, which recently [reported](https://www.theinformation.com/facebook-struggles-to-stop-decline-in-original-sharing?ref=hypebot.com) a double-digit decline in original sharing on its newsfeeds. Meanwhile, as much as 30% of overall smartphone usage [occurs](https://www.hypebot.com/content/files/musically-com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/sandbox162-5345435.pdf) on messaging apps and other “dark social” platforms that offer little visibility on the backend. As a result, experimentation with chatbots, which music companies are reinterpreting as a personalized marketing channel, is reaching an all-time high. Over 34,000 developers have already joined Facebook’s Messenger platform and have developed more than 30,000 bots. In music alone, there are bots like Shazam look-a-like [AudioShot](https://www.messenger.com/t/audioshot?ref=hypebot.com), artist-centered bots for [Hardwell](https://www.messenger.com/t/djhardwell/?ref=hypebot.com), [Selena Gomez](https://www.messenger.com/t/1731628057111758/?ref=hypebot.com) and [Justin Bieber](https://www.messenger.com/t/bieberbot/?ref=hypebot.com) (the latter two are fan creations), new music release alerts like [Record Bird](https://www.messenger.com/t/recordbird/?ref=hypebot.com), recommendation engines [Lazyset](https://www.facebook.com/lazyset/) and [Music Rover](https://www.messenger.com/t/musicr0ver/?ref=hypebot.com) and Airbnb-style studio rentals through the [Studiotime bot](https://www.messenger.com/t/studiotimeio/?ref=hypebot.com).One wonders, however, whether supply is actually matching demand in the music chatbot world, and whether highly-targeted commands and questions within a messaging-app interface will actually drive music revenues. In fact, many analysts and executives have vocally decried the slow mass adoption of bots at large.“So far, there has been no killer bot,” [wrote](https://medium.com/@tedlivingston/bots-are-better-without-conversation-fcf9e7634fc4?ref=hypebot.com#.6abph5jum) Ted Livingston, CEO of Kik. “This is not yet the world that the early hype promised.”Jonathan Libov, Analyst at Union Square Ventures, [claimed](http://whoo.ps/2016/08/31/a-junior-vc?ref=hypebot.com) that the enthusiasm amongst developers and investors for bots “currently exceeds consumer interest.”Shane Atchison, CEO of POSSIBLE, curtly [noted](http://www.inc.com/shane-atchison/6-reasons-to-think-very-carefully-before-using-chatbots.html?ref=hypebot.com) that “merely because your customers are spending time on a platform doesn’t mean they want you there.”At the SF MusicTech Summit’s chatbot panel earlier this month, everyone in the room raised their hand when asked if they tried a chatbot, but nearly all of them put their hand back down when asked if they had returned to those chatbots a second time. As with so many sectors in the startup world, repetition is high, yet retention is low. From a marketing perspective, however, chatbots could have a long-term positive effect on brand messaging in the music industry by painting music-tech in a more human, personalized and conversation-driven light, as opposed to historical marketing tactics that seem more like casting a wide net while wearing a blindfold.“Words are the new UI/UX,” suggests Max Pelzner of [Thinkbox.io](http://www.thinkbox.io/?ref=hypebot.com), who developed the Studiotime bot within 24 hours and with little coding involved. “I’m constantly iterating on individual words and sentences to make the bot’s messages feel more personal, and more like an integral part of the story.”In addition, chatbots can help solve the last-mile problem in music discovery and awareness that existing advertising methods struggle to solve. By adopting an already-existing interface, chatbots reduce the cost and friction of trying out new services, and could also spread more organically through native, user-driven “mentions” and “invites”—which is more cumbersome to achieve on standalone apps.“Really it’s just a question of reach,” David Marcus, VP of Messaging Products at Facebook, [explained](http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2016/09/12/facebook-messenger-offer-bot-assisted-payments/90264934/?ref=hypebot.com) at this year’s TechCrunch Disrupt. “You want to be able to reach all \[of your contacts\], not just 95%.”One of the most exciting revenue opportunities with chatbots is at live events, where transactions are often more impulsive, more tangible and more immediate. For instance, as festival management software startup BeatSwitch [wrote](https://blog.beatswitch.com/posts/why-all-festival-companies-need-a-messenger-bot?ref=hypebot.com) on its blog, “bots can be a way for festival organizers to let people start saving for festival tickets in the future. This will not only give organizers quantitative data about the success rate of their upcoming festival, but \[will also\] create a constant revenue stream of ticket sales. With those parameters, a promoter can scale his festival based on the cash flow that’s coming in before the show’s actual dates.” [![Download](http://hypebot.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b36c69e201b8d2353a68970c-320wi "Download")](http://hypebot.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b36c69e201b8d2353a68970c-popup?ref=hypebot.com)Others argue that chatbots are not so much revenue generators as they are medallions of convenience, which is a plus for any consumer. “It will never be a ‘sales tool,’” Luke Ferrar, Senior Digital Marketing Manager at Virgin EMI Records UK, [told](https://www.hypebot.com/content/files/musically-com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/sandbox162-5345435.pdf) Music Ally. “But I think it can guarantee near 100% instant delivery of a message to a group of superfans, which is quite a powerful thing.”Ferrar’s words underscore the importance of driving instant interaction, rather than longer-form conversation, on automated messaging services. Indeed, bots can make certain operational processes in the music industry much more efficient, which has both B2C and B2B ramifications.Music businesses could take inspiration, for instance, from the *New York Times* data science team; they built a Slack bot named [Blossom](http://www.niemanlab.org/2015/08/the-new-york-times-built-a-slack-bot-to-help-decide-which-stories-to-post-to-social-media/?ref=hypebot.com) that simplified workflow for their social media managers by automatically recommending which articles to post on specific networks. This points to one of the biggest challenges with chatbots, especially those based on celebrities and other personalities: convincing consumers to adopt automated behavior in a chat setting, which still thrives on longer, more unpredictable communication with other human beings. To modify Atchison’s words, *services* are easy; *people* are hard.“Discovery of discreet conversational services becomes less of an issue if users are slowly trained to think and type more like programmers,” [wrote](https://medium.com/chris-messina/2016-will-be-the-year-of-conversational-commerce-1586e85e3991?ref=hypebot.com) Chris Messina, Developer Experience Lead at Uber. “That is, the more that users get frustrated expressing themselves in complete sentences, and the more technically sophisticated they become, the more likely they are to warm to the efficiencies of the command line.”Nonetheless, music chatbots will still need support from celebrities and personalities in order to drive mass user adoption. “We need more chatbots that reflect the personas of people we care about,” [wrote](https://medium.com/startup-grind/i-created-a-selena-gomez-chatbot-for-my-daughter-and-saw-the-future-96f2cffd8743?ref=hypebot.com#.z95rktfzw) Josh Bocanegra, who built the Selena Gomez bot. “These chatbots will consequently strengthen the brand of public figures, which will then increase user adoption of chatbots overall.”While we can expect a high attrition and turnover rate for these early-stage chatbots, this is an exciting and long-overdue time for experimentation with automated messaging services, whose applicability across multiple verticals in the music business could improve and enhance experiences for consumers and artists alike.“There are so many different ways it can free up your bandwidth to focus on other tasks,” says Pelzner. “For this reason, I think eventually everyone will have a bot.”*To follow more of my thoughts about music, technology, creativity and business, you can find me on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/cheriehu42?ref=hypebot.com) and/or sign up for my newsletter, [Water and Music](https://www.getrevue.co/profile/cheriehu42?ref=hypebot.com).*MORE: [Facebook Chatbot Creation Platform Octane AI Raises $1.5M, Partners With 50 Cent, Aerosmith, KISS, SPiN](https://www.hypebot.com/facebook-chatbot-creation-platform-octane-ai-raises-15m-partners-with-50-cent-aerosmith-kiss-spin/)
