[**Universal Music Group**](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/umg/) (UMG) and [**Sony Music**](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/sony/) have escalated their legal offensive against leading DIY music distributor [**DistroKid**](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/distrokid/)**.** In a new motion filed in Manhattan federal court, the major labels are demanding that DistroKid disclose exact figures on the volume of AI-generated music it sends to streaming services.

**The action connects two major legal battles:** [**UMG's copyright suit against DistroKid**](https://www.hypebot.com/umg-sues-distrokid-for-alleged-ai-slop-and-copyright-theft/)and the industry’s ongoing high-stakes **litigation against AI generator Suno.**

One analysis of 1,743 verified tracks by 886 artists from 54 countries showed that [**92.8% of tracks were created using Suno**](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/christopherwieduwilt%5F7-numbers-that-run-ai-music-in-2026-ugcPost-7505649719906578434-8%5FBd/?ref=hypebot.com) and **77.6% of those had been distributed by DistroKid**.

### Why Major Labels Want DistroKid’s AI Upload Data

To defeat Suno’s "fair use" defense in federal court, the majors must prove that AI-generated audio directly harms the commercial market for human creators. Because Suno does not track music once users export it, the labels are targeting the top distributor that puts them onto DSPs.

**DistroKid holds the key pipeline:**

- **Massive Volume:** Court filings reveal **DistroKid** delivered nearly **12 million tracks** to a single major streaming service in just six months - more than half of all uploads that platform received.
- **The AI Pipeline:** Research from SIQA [estimates](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/christopherwieduwilt%5F7-numbers-that-run-ai-music-in-2026-ugcPost-7505649719906578434-8%5FBd/?ref=hypebot.com) DistroKid accounts for **77.6% of all AI releases** with an identifiable distributor. Overall DistroKid delivers [30%-40% of all music uploaded](https://www.hypebot.com/distrokid-takedown-wave-hits-indie-artists-after-umg-lawsuit/) to Spotify and other DSPs.
- **Subpoena Demands:** The labels want monthly totals of tracks analyzed by DistroKid’s AI detection software, how many were flagged as AI-generated, and the streaming royalties those songs earned.

### **Tying the Suno Battle to UMG’s Previous DistroKid Lawsuit**

This filing intensifies a multi-front legal squeeze on DistroKid:

1. **The Direct Infringement Lawsuit:** Last month UMG sued DistroKid directly, labeling its unlimited upload model an "[AI-slop pipeline](https://www.hypebot.com/umg-sues-distrokid-for-alleged-ai-slop-and-copyright-theft/)" after discovering single accounts allegedly uploading thousands of unauthorized tracks.
2. **The Suno Evidence Subpoena:** By bringing Sony into this new New York motion, the labels are now turning DistroKid into an involuntary key witness to show how Suno's output enters commercial DSP catalogs.

**The DIY Artist Fallout:** DistroKid’s recent attempts at cleanup has already caused collateral damage, sometimes [purging legitimate human artists](https://www.hypebot.com/distrokid-takedown-wave-hits-indie-artists-after-umg-lawsuit/) with slow customer support recourse.

## **Hypebot’s Bottom Line**

The major labels are no longer just suing AI developers over training datasets; they are also trying to cut off any monetization pipes to streaming platforms.

The days of 'upload and forget' verification-free music distribution are over, which in and of itself it not a bad thing for legitimate artists. For independent musicians the challenge will be safeguarding their authentic releases as automated filters get more aggressive.
