Somewhere, an old folder of badly labeled MP3s just felt a tremor. The desktop music player that helped define the early digital-music era is scheduled to return in the first half of 2027 through a new partnership with [**Deezer**](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/deezer/). The reboot will give Winamp its own premium subscription service, powered by Deezer’s streaming technology and licensed global catalog. But that's not all. Here's what Winamp plans to build *around* that catalog... According to the [company’s announcement](https://winamp.com/press/winamp-announces-strategic-partnership-with-deezer-to-power-the-next-generation-of-its-iconic-music-player?ref=hypebot.com), the new player will **bring streaming together with local music files, internet radio, podcasts** and **personal cloud collections.** It is also promising a highly customizable interface, social features and new ways to [discover](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/discovery/) and organize music. (Pricing and supported platforms have not yet been revealed.) In other words, Winamp does not want to return as one more [streaming app](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/streaming-music/) with a familiar logo pasted on top. It wants to revive the idea that a music player can feel like *yours*. Of course, listeners got pretty used to building digital libraries song by song, rearranging their files, and installing skins to customize the look of their player before streaming services like Spotify and Pandora came along. Your dashboard was your little spaceship command center. Streaming made music vastly easier to access, but it also made listening interfaces all look so boring and similar: search bar, recommendation feed, algorithmic playlist, repeat. Deezer will supply the catalog and technical infrastructure, while Winamp keeps control of the product, brand and subscriber relationship. As licensed catalogs become broadly similar, the next competition may be less about *what* a service carries than how it lets people collect, navigate and relate to it. For artists, another branded doorway into essentially the same streaming ecosystem does not automatically mean better economics or stronger fan relationships. Winamp says its subscription model will be “fundamentally different,” but has not yet explained what that means. Those details will determine whether this is a real alternative or simply Deezer wearing one extremely nostalgic skin. The classic desktop player is not disappearing. Winamp says it still has more than 40 million active users worldwide, and plans to add the new subscription service to that app after the next-generation player launches. There is reason to keep one eyebrow raised. Winamp [announced another ambitious streaming-era revival in 2018](https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/15/winamp-returns-in-2019-to-whip-the-llamas-ass-harder-than-ever/?ref=hypebot.com), promising a 2019 release that never materialized. This time, at least, it has a partner capable of supplying the licensing and streaming machinery. So yes, Winamp may be back. But like, in 2027...
