Next Week: Empowering The Artist

Commentary_rooster_2 Over the next two weeks on Hypebot I’ll be exploring at least five of the top web sites that are helping indie and d.i.y. musicians gather fans, communicate with them and monetize their relationships.

SonicbidsOurStage, TopSpin, Nimbit and ReverbNation each have their own approach to the challenges facing artists competing in the new music marketplace.  We’ll be taking a careful and occasionally critical look at each including new exclusive interviews with executives from all five companies.

We’ll also be soliciting and publishing reader feedback. First question: What other popular artist empowering sites and services do you think we should feature in addition to the five above?

  1. ReverbNation, Last.fm, MySpace and SellABand are my “really needed” bouquet. I also use Indiestr for digital sales (it has the “name your own price” option) and then less needed stuff.

  2. That’s a good list Bruce. I would probably add Last.fm too. Even though you aren’t a fan of distributors, what about TuneCore & CD Baby?

  3. I’d have to add Jamendo.com. Not so popular yet within the anglo-saxon sphere, but big in continental Europe (somehting like 350,000 registered members). What’s different about them is that the music is up for free download and the artists can receive donations directly from users.

  4. Bruce – The folks at MPTrax are almost ready to start helping artists. Launch date is coming very soon, but just thought we should get the PR machine rolling…

  5. Bruce — Really looking forward to this! As a DIY artist, I am extremely interested in how I can cultivate and engage, and I can profit from my art.
We are conducting a survey asking musicians how they collaborate on music, engage fans, and profit from their works. You can check it out at http://tinyurl.com/5ce33d. Any interest in partnering up for this survey? We can share the results!!

  6. Definitely Fanmail Marketing. This application has really changed the way we engage with our audience and is extremely user friendly too. We started using Fanmail two years ago and haven’t looked back since. Can’t say enough about these guys.
