Bandwidth: Overheard on Day 2

  • David Hyman (MOG) said that in order for music services like his to cover the streaming rate that labels are demanding -- $0.01 per song, per stream -- they would have to sell advertising at $5-$10 CPM. In his opinion, this is very unrealistic -- he sees a rate of $0.001 per stream as more reasonable.
  • Music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas (Chop Shop Records) said that established acts often command licensing fees of $40,000 and up for a song placement in a TV show. Emerging artists, on the other hand, might see anywhere from $1,000 and up.
  • The "Music and Brands" panelists were asked what song they would choose if they had to brand John McCain musically. Jeff Daniel (Rock River Music) said he would definitely NOT select "Running On Empty", and would probably choose "2000 Man" by The Rolling Stones. David Brewster (PlayNetwork) said he would go classic rock with a little edge... and Ko Kawashima (BPM) said she'd really have to sit down with the man and have a talk before selecting a track.
