Friday’s Music Briefing: Popcuts, Wippit, Nickelback, MP3tunes & More

Money
> Using yet a another new and creative sales model, Popcuts.com shares the profits of song sales with the trendspotters who bought it first. So far the site’s catalog is slim, but somehow they’ve avoided the "multi-level marketing crap that had sunk other similar schemes to deliver an interesting product.  I’d like to see them add a widget to take your recommendations off site.

> Early UK paid P2P player Wippit.com has shut down after 8 years.  No lawsuits. Just lack of sales.

> Nickelback is set to release it’s second to last album with Roadrunner despite it’s recent big 360 deal with Live Nation.  Paul from Digital Music News suggests that this somehow "creates some risk" for Live Nation, but I have to respectfully disagree.  First, Michael Rapino & Co. were smart enough to have factored this in to any calculations and more importantly given the current music sales environment, most profits will come from the touring, sponsorship and merchandise that Live Nation controls now.

> Collections stored on online storage locker MP3tunes are now also available viaMp3tunes_logo Logitech’s Squeesbox Boombox wireless music player. The combination adds real value to both products.  I’m giving the Boombox a real chance of taking off. (press release) If Logitech is reading this, I’d love to test drive one and share it with Hypebot’s readers.

> Taco Bell reprises its Feed The Beat promo that give indie bands gifts certificates and shares downloads with fans. (press release)

> BETARecords.com, an indie music and social networking site will launch of BETA Records TV, a half-hour weekly tv series with a 52-episode commitment to air in over 140 U.S. television markets including the Top 15.

> Music startup myAWOL has changed its name to LP33.tv prior to launch> The new name’s goal is to offer greater clarity and instant recognition about the company’s mission –
blending music and video
for a total artist and user experience. (press release) Sorry but I find this name as confusing as the last one…
