Gaming Gets Social, But Where’s The Music?

A new survey shows that 24% of internet users in the U.S. and UK regularly play games on social networking platforms like Facebook and MySpace. That means that there is a total social gamer population of 100 million in America and the United Kingdom alone IN dollars and cents that translates to revenues of more than $1 billion annually; and contrary to prevailing stereotypes, the average social gamer is a 43-year old woman.

Facebook is far and away the most popular destination: 83% of social gamers cite Facebook as a place where they play social games, compared to 24% who play on MySpace, 7% on Bebo and 5% who play on Friendster.

An Untapped Market For Music

Unlike their Playstation and Wii brethren, most online social games do not prominently feature original or popular music or offer in game music purchase. And social gaming's most active users – adult women – are one of music's lost demographics.
