Better Than The Van: CouchSurfing For Musicians

image from underfield.files.wordpress.com In an age where fans sometimes take from artists more than they give, a new way for fans to become more active participates in their cultural lives and make a difference in the careers of those they love has emerged.  This time around, there is no talk of donations or fan-funding or even Tweets. Instead, Better Than The Van offers fans the chance to network with touring artists and provide them with a place to stay for the night.

It’s like CouchSurfing, but for musicians. The logic is simple: anything is better than sleeping in the van, safer too. Though, even if you don’t owe them an album or two in appreciation, hosting a band for the night be worth it for the experience and adventure. Likely, you’ll end up with a kitchen full of gentle men and women who’d love nothing more than a pillow and a Cup-Of-Ramen or some home-vegan cooking for the road. According to Indie Music Tech, the site is currently looking for beta testers; if interested, artists and fans can sign-up here.

Take a look at a video they made:

  1. This is such a great idea! I’ve always loved the concept of Couchsurfing and who needs it more than a struggling, touring band? And if I was an artist I’d definitely prefer to have a place to crash lined up in advance as opposed to having to sketchily ask people the night of.
