Facebook Relaunches Its Music Page (0r) How To Build A Boring Facebook Page

image from profile.ak.fbcdn.net Facebook launched its Music page for musicians, music related businesses and fans back in early 2008 and then pretty much left it alone. Now, just as musician focused Facebook apps from DamnTheRadio, ReverbNation, RootMusic and a handful of others are gaining major traction, the social network has decided it's time to reconnect with the music community. Here's what Facebook Music is offering:

The Music on Facebook pages serve as a guide to help bands, fans and venues create more interesting Facebook pages. For musicians, Facebook Music has highlighted free features including the ability to:

  • Send updates about tours and concerts
  • Showcase new releases
  • Engage with fans
  • Upload photos from concerts

There are similar tools and suggestions for venues and fans, as well as, instructions for linking to a Twitter account and posting to Facebook via text message.

The result is a more robust presence than the normal Bacebook Page, but still falls far short of features like additonal graphic elements or music and video that ReverbNation, DamnTheRadio and RootMusic offer free or for a couple of dollars a month.

  1. For the behemoth that Facebook is I’m really surprised that this is all that they’ve done. Unless this is only the first step of something bigger and is just a reaction to Js comments last week regarding Root Music. Kinda like a clip round the ear to remind everyone who the boss is.
This seems way short of the mark of what they could have done. It does however bring the question up as to whether a band should be using Facebook as the primary connection with fans and hand over all that data to the advertisers or whether the band should hold it out on their own website. I know what I’d want.
    Smell like Myspace?

  2. Here are still the best products for musicians on Facebook:
    Nimbit’s SpotLight http://apps.facebook.com/nimbitstore
    FanBridge’s DTR http://apps.facebook.com/dtr_music
    Root Music’s Band Page http://apps.facebook.com/bandpage
    Reverb’s Band Profile http://apps.facebook.com/rn_my_band
Smaller independent companies have a history of producing better products and innovating faster than “most” big companies — so I’d look to these companies to continue to offer better solutions for independent musicians for a long time to come #nimbit #reverbnation #rootmusic #fanbridge #facebook #bands #bandpage #bandprofile
