Lady Gaga Week #1: The Impressive Numbers
- Universal Music Group intiital projections were just 400,000.
- 1,108,000 copies of the album sold in week #1
- The biggest opening week performance since 2005 when 50 Cent's The Massacre sold 1,141,000
- Gaga is the fifth female artist in history to have a 1M+ sales week.
- Digital sales were 662,000
- The biggest sales week ever for a digital album
- Sales were boosted by AmazonMP3's 2 day 99 cents sale
- Sn estimated 66% of digital sales (440,000 units) came via AmazonMP3's 2 day 99 cents sale
A million is a million. 99% of artists couldn’t give away a million albums BUT the fact that about 40% of that 1.1 mill were $0.99 albums taints the achievement if Gaga is competing with the biggest artists vying for the best sales weeks. If each album was, say, $9.99, the conversation this week may have been how the Gaga hype machine was struggling to eclipse the sales achievements of the purposefully under-hyped Adele campaign.
