Spotify Says It Wants To Be The ‘Operating System For All Music’

It's an ambitious plan, but Spotify hopes to become the operating system for all music, according to a top executive. "Everyone has their individual idea for what Spotify should do next, which is why we love music apps," says Sten Garmark, Spotify's director of platform.

"They are important so we can cater to all those needs. And since people are asking us to provide these features, when we do, music will be more valuable to them," he told the Guardian. "They will be more likely to pay, and that makes more money for artists."

But bigger changes are ahead for Spotify. "We have to turn ourselves into the OS of music," said Garmark. "We are in the middle of a transformation from being an app ourselves to being a platform.

Two New Spotify Apps

For now at least, apps will still play a major roll, and at the recent Music Apps: Beyond the Hype conference in London he offered an advance look at two new Spotify apps: The Complete Collection offers digitizd CD booklets to accompany hits albums abd The Legacy Of which pulls in artist bios, photos and playlists.

"In this digital age of music, the experience in some ways got reduced to just a track or a playlist, sated Garmark. "But with these apps, it can start getting back to the old way of immersing yourself in the album cover, or reading about the music while listening to it. And artists can use it to connect with their audience."

  1. I love Spotify and I have been using a lot lately, but I think in order for it to become the OS for music it has to become less dependent on Facebook and more of a stand alone service like itunes.. or at least provide another version that isn’t Facebook centric…

  2. It’s also dependent on its own library. I think people will always prefer a program like iTunes because you can listen to whatever you want. The only music available on Spotify is content that’s gone through the distribution process and been approved. Obviously this leaves out a lot of content and isn’t real-time.

  3. Against. I’m not gonna earn pennies for hours spent on making ambitious music or get forced to create an account on some spying social network like Facebook to let them sell my personal data just to discover new music. I don’t need such an ‘operating system’! Spotify is not any good store, just temporary hype, loudspeaker. CD Baby pays accurate money, as well as iTunes and Amazon. I trust them only.

  4. i like Spotify, but it is FAR from being the “ultimate jukebox”. Spotify is missing a LOT of basic music so it isn’t even close to having the capacity to be someone’s only source for music. its self-promotional spot claiming that Spotify gives money back to musicians is equally infuriating–we all know what cheap SOBs you are, Spotify, when it comes to giving the artist their due. you would simply not exist without them.

  5. Wrong Anthony. Spotify’s app combines your local library and Spotify’s library so you can “listen to whatever you want”. But the last part of your comment is true. But no matter if you own it you can play it.
