Vinyl News: Sales Growth, Vinyl Kickstarters, Marshall Crenshaw's Vinyl Subscriptions

Crenshaw-vinylVinyl continues its steady growth with record breaking sales, plenty of crowdfunding campaigns and new experiments. In addition to vinyl releases, a number of documentary and journalistic projects related to vinyl are being funded via Kickstarter. Also of note, Marshall Crenshaw is experimenting with a vinyl subscription series that offers an interesting alternative model to that of indie streaming subscription services.

Rising Tide of Vinyl

Earlier this year Nielsen SoundScan reported increased vinyl sales in 2011 again breaking sales records for vinyl.

As reported in April, a majority of those sales occur via indie record stores.

Dust & Grooves: A Photography Book About Vinyl Collectors

The Dust & Grooves campaign to fund a book of photographs of and interviews with vinyl collectors was wildly successful exceeding a $27k goal with over $41k in pledges.

Two vinyl-related projects on Kickstarter that could use your help:

Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton (This Is Stones Throw Records) - Documentary seeking $35k with 3 days to go.

The iCrates Annual: A Magazine About Music On Vinyl - Less than halfway to $26k goal with 6 days to go.

Marshall Crenshaw Launches Vinyl Subscription Service

Marshall Crenshaw is going direct to fans with a vinyl subscription service:

"The subscription service...will provide fans with a steady stream of new Marshall Crenshaw music via a series of exclusive three-song 10-inch, 45 RPM vinyl EPs on Addie-Ville Records, six of which the artist plans to release over a two-year period. In addition to the vinyl discs, subscribers will also receive a download card for digital versions of the EP tracks."

"Each EP consists entirely of newly recorded, never-before-released material, encompassing a new original Crenshaw composition, a classic cover tune, and a new reworking of a time-honored favorite."

A focused offering from a man that knows his fans.
