YouTube Debuts Free Fan Finder, Updates YouTube Capture App

Youtube-captureThis week YouTube introduced Fan Finder featuring video ads that the viewer can skip after 5 second. The ads are currently being offered for free to channel owners and will be shown "across YouTube." On a related note, YouTube has updated its YouTube Capture iOS app for recording videos from your phone. They've added more advanced options to enable you to edit and connect clips on the fly among other features.

The weird integration of Google+ comments into YouTube has upset many videomakers who are noting serious problems with how they work. This goes beyond typical kneejerk responses to change. Some commenters on my post have also noted that their comments have dropped. As upsetting as the situation may feel at the moment, I would still advise folks to hang in there and see how things get sorted.

Fan Finder Channel Ad Video

But there's some excellent news for folks with video channels. YouTube introduced Fan Finder this week and are offering channel owners the opportunity to create free video ads for their channels:

"We'll turn your video into a TrueView video ad, which gives viewers the option to skip after 5 seconds. We’ll show your ad for free across YouTube to connect you with brand new fans. Fan Finder takes into account the interactions that viewers have with millions of YouTube channels in order reach the people who are most likely to engage with your channel."

Hopefully that will soften the blow for at least some of those struggling with Google+ comments.

YouTube Capture 2.0 Walkthrough

Yesterday YouTube released an updated version of its YouTube Capture app for iOS that allows you to:

  • Start recording instantly
  • Stitch together an unlimited number of clips as you build your story
  • Trim and rearrange clips right from your phone
  • Add a soundtrack from your music collection or YouTube’s audio library
  • Touch up videos with color correction and stabilization
  • Upload to YouTube and share on Google+, Facebook, and Twitter – all in one step

Nick Summers has more details on what's new and how it works. And it sounds pretty darn cool.

I'm taking these developments as a ray of sunshine for the land of YouTube. Honestly, if Google screws up YouTube it's going to be bad for musicians. It's been a great tool for many and, given YouTube's growing ability to identify music and music videos, should provide better support for rightsholders over time. It would be a bad thing to watch go downhill.

  1. Hit the nail on the head. In the end, i think FB comes to mind when they had to issue public apologies when they had so many privacy issues with their fans. G+ has ignored the outcries of many in regards to linking G+ and YT Channel, as well as what you mentioned succinctly in this article. They will try to stick it out thinking ppl will come around and love what’s been unpopular and hated by many. Anyway, FAN FINDER will go down as one of YouTube’s brilliant ideas since its inception in ’05.
    THANK YOU for this article.
