Beats Music Is #1 iTunes Music App Days After Adding In-App Subcriptions

image from www.hypebot.comJust days after enabling in-app subscription purchase, Beats Music is the #1 free music app download on iTunes. Among free apps in all categories, Beats Music ranks #5. The shift costs Beats 30% of very $9.99 monthly subscription, but is likely driving conversions from free trail to paid.

Beats Music updated its iTunes app on Friday, adding in-app subscriptions along with more control for artists. The move means Beats Music now pays 30% of any $9.99 monthly subscription fees generated via their app to Apple. Rhapsody and Rdio allow in-app subscriptions, but notably Spotify has not.

Enabling purchase via iTunes is "what you do when you want subscribers,” CEO Ian Rogers told Re/Code. “If you don’t care if people subscribe or not, and you’ve got a free product, maybe then you wouldn’t do it.”

More Topspin Integratation

The app upgrade also includes further integration of the Topspin direct to fan platform which Beats acquired recently. Artist Offers enables users to "discover new content and merchandise from your favorite artists."
