Retailers and Independent Labels Unite Endorsing Monday Global Release Day

HeadphonesThere has been a significant amount of industry chatter surrounding the abandonment of the national release day in order to make way for a globally unified release day. Retailers and independent labels are in agreement that a global release day may be in the best interest of the music industry as a whole, but are pushing for a reconsideration of the proposed global release day falling on Friday. Worried that a Friday release could cause the industry to incur unnecessary additional costs, and ultimately defeating the purpose of approaching releases globally, the following organizations are endorsing a Monday global release day.

Alliance Entertainment Corporation
Alliance of Independent Media Store (AIMS)
American Association of Independent Music (A2IM)
Amoeba Music
Association of Independent Music (AIM)
Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS)
Department of Record Stores (DORS)
Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA)
Hastings Entertainment Inc
Newbury Comics
Redeye
Rough Trade NYC
Rough Trade UK
SC Distribution

Several global releases have fallen on a Monday and the industry has proved it's staying power, handling those releases efficiently and without additional cost. In a release that went out yesterday morning, Kim Bayley, Director General of the Entertainment Retailers Association said, “The evidence suggests that virtually all the benefits of a Global Release Date can be captured on a Monday without any additional costs. It is a no-brainer. The potential to create a New Music Monday focusing all of the industry’s marketing efforts at the beginning of the week is very exciting.”
